Smithy Types
There are three different settings for the Smithy in TribalWars. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, depending on one's playing style. These smithy types are:
- Simple tech research
- 3 level tech research
- 10 level tech research
All troops sent as support will have defensive capabilities dependant upon the research levels of the village that is being supported, NOT the village the troops originated from.
Simple Tech Research Smithy
In the simple tech research smithy, all available units for the world are researched a single time. Once the troop has been researched for that village, it is at its maximum offensive and defensive capabilities and all that is needed is to build the troops. Spears are automatically researched upon completion of the smithy.
Advantages and Disadvantages
With this smithy system, all units can be researched to maximum, allowing one to create any unit at its maximum capability in any village. While this makes for easy changing from one village type to another, it also encourages the use of both offensive and defensive units in every village, also known as mixed villages.
The simulator can be used effectively as if one knows what troops the other person has, a simple input of these numbers into the simulator will give a pretty accurate view of the outcome of a battle. There is no need to guess what tech levels the opponent has researched.
Research costs are relatively low, allowing for every unit type to be researched in every village.
3-level Tech Research Smithy
In the 3-level tech research smithy, each unit can be researched a maximum of three times. This smithy allows a maximum of 15 tech researches per smithy, therefore one cannot research all troops to maximum level in every village. This makes strategy and specialized villages more important than with the simple or 10 level tech research systems.
Advantages and Disadvantages
This system requires a higher level of strategy than the simple or even the 10-level system, as the player is required to choose which unit types to research, and to what levels. The smithy will only allow 15 total researches, therefore one must choose to either research only certain units or to research all units but sacrifice offensive and defensive ability for each unit. One strategy that works well with this smithy type is to make specialized villages, either offensive or defensive. This allows for the maximum research of either offensive OR defensive units in each village.
This makes changing village types harder than in the simple tech research system because the player would have to revoke research levels for one unit before being able to research a new unit. Research costs are not refunded when tech research levels are revoked.
This smithy type also makes the simulator a bit less accurate unless one knows what levels the opponent has researched for each troop type. Each research level offers higher offensive and defensive capabilities for each unit. One also has to decide if the cost of upgrading a unit is more or less effective than producing more of the unit at a lower tech level.
10-level Tech Research Smithy
In the 10-level tech research smithy, all units can be researched to a maximum level of 10. Like in the simple tech research smithy, there is no limit to how many units can be researched to maximum. The research costs go up with each subsequent level, but so does the offensive and defensive capabilities of those units.
Advantages and Disadvantages
This smithy level allows the player to research all units to maximum, much like in the simple tech system but for a much higher cost than the simple tech system. Strategy still plays an important role as the player has to decide when it is more advantageous to upgrade a research level versus building more of the unit at the lower tech level.
If the player chooses to do so, village types can be easily changed from one type to another as techs do not have to be revoked because all units can be researched to level 10.
This system makes the simulator the least accurate of all the smithy systems, as there is a greater margin of error when guessing the opponent's tech researches for each unit. This system negates the absolute necessity of specialized villages, although specializing villages is still a solid tactical strategy.
