The spear fighter is the most basic unit. It is good in defending against cavalry and to start plundering other villages.

Spearmen are used mainly for defense as they have excellent defense rating against cavalry compared to other foot units. They are also cheap, and quite fast. Spearmen also serve as an excellent farming unit as they have a large haul capacity.

If used in farming begin with abandoned villages - 120 per village is usually sufficient, depending on the resources and warehouse of the village.

Notes:

• As the game progresses, you may eventually research light cavalry, which doesn't mean spear fighters are no longer necessary. Though you may still use them to farm, their main use will now be to defend your village(s) against Cavalry attacks. Spear fighters become your most vital defense, roughly as important as swordsmen. Most people suggest building spear fighters in a 1:1 ratio with swordsmen.
• Though spear fighters have several advantages, they do have a few disadvantages. The largest problem with spear fighters is their lack of attack power. Early in the game, if you are farming even a semi-active player and he/she upgrades their wall even a few levels, they can begin killing your spear fighters even without a defense of there own. Furthermore, if you are farming with them, and the person gets support, they will die in large numbers. Therefore you should never use spear fighters to attack someone you know has an army, and use them only to farm inactive players, because countering them is easy.
