Combat calculations
The table below shows which units are strong against which in both attack and defence. It is rather complicated at first but shows quite exactly which unit is the best defence a particular other unit, or which unit best to use in breaking a defence of certain other units.
Explanation
As you see below, the table has a vertical column of units names in red on the left. This column contains the units that are attacking. On the top is a horizontal row of units, which are the defenders. Then the rest of the table is filled with numbers. A number indicates the outcome of a battle, where the red unit left in that number's row is attacking the green unit at the top of that number's column. Numbers above 1 indicate that the attacker has won. Numbers below 1 indicate that the defender has won. The higher the number, the stronger the attacker was compared to the defender. Logically, the lower the number, the better the defender was against the attacker.
Example
- I expect my enemy to attack me with an army of Light cavalry, what do I build? In the left, red, column, look up light cavalry. Then in that row, find the lowest number (indicating the greatest advantage of defender over attacker). That would be 0.614 for spearmen. So the best thing to build in this situation is many spearmen.
- I have scouted my enemy and he has a defense of solely archers. Obviously I want his town so what should I send as clearing force? I look up archer in the green top row. Then I look for the highest number in the column below it (indicating the greatest advantage of attacker over defender). That would be 10.53 for Mounted archer. I will make a bunch of those and I should have a really easy victory, because 10.53 is a very high number.

Note though that as these conditions are all percentual, the table is still usable for different conditions. For a level 20 wall, all numbers can roughly be divided by two, as all defenders are 8x stronger. But units that are strong against others with a lvl 0 wall, will be strong against the exact same units with lvl 20 wall. Same for luck and morale. The only exception is the wall's base defense, which can however be neglected when dealing with great amounts of units. moral usually will be lower than 100%, also watch for paladins as they can improve defence
Calculations
(You can use the table perfectly fine without this section so only read it if you want to know the little maths behind it) The number is the population of dead defenders over the population of the dead attackers. Population meaning the number of farm spots required for a unit. As such, barrack units count for 1, light cavalry for 4, mounted for 5 and heavy for 6. This I found a more fair comparison than just dead defenders over dead attackers. For example, the 1.000 for spearman attacking axeman indicates that an equal amount of attackers and defenders perished. The 10.53 for mounted cavalry attacking archers indicates that more than 10 times more archer population perishes than mounted archers. Seeing mounted archers are 5 population and the table assumes a battle of equal population attackers and defenders, there are 5 archer defenders for each mounted archer attacker, and more than 10x more archer population dies than mounted archers population, meaning that counting actual units instead of population, 50x more archers die than mounted archers (in the test 190 of 2000 mounted archers died while killing all 10000 archers).
Conclusions
A few conclusions that you can make directly from the table:
- Spearman are only good against cavalry (both attack and defence)
- Axeman make fine attackers but absolutely terrible defenders
- Light cavalry and mounted cavalry are in no situation good defenders
- Archers can defend nicely but against (mounted) archers die really, really easily
- Good defenders in many cases are archers, spearman and especially swordman
- Good attackers in many cases are mounted archers and especially axeman and light cavalry
- It is probably a bad idea to have only one kind of unit in your army
- Defending with axeman against a light cavalry is officially the most stupid thing to do
- Heavy cavalry are good units for defence! They are strong against axeman, but weak to light cavalry.
